“Maybe we are all the best and we just forgot” – CHA Cathy Ackert passed away on April 3, 2023, in her Seattle home surrounded by her family. Born in Seattle, Washington at Virginia Mason Hospital to Patricia and George Cope. She lived most of her rich life in Seattle. Her career in Computer Programming for Boeing, Sea-First Bank, and eventually Bank of America as a Computer Systems Architect, was always a puzzle and a pride for her. Her home of over 50 years in the Maple Leaf Neighborhood provided a refuge for her family, friends, and neighbors. She was and will forever be an embodiment of love, generosity, humor, and song. She was our matriarch who has been a refuge, a solace, and a fierce friend to us all. We are all grateful to have been sheltered within her compassion and boundless joy. Cathy gave us a clear map for living a well lived life. In these last years, she showed us an exemplary way to navigate aging and illness – with song, humor and smattering of F-bombs. Fare thee well, Cathy, our forever and ever heroine. Cathy is survived by her husband, Jay Stopper; her two daughters, Christine Hunnicutt and Denise Ackert; her sister, Mary Cope Glossner; and an amazing loving family of additional kids, grandkids, great grandkids: Michael Black, Kelsey Darden, Maya Vallevona, Lisa Stopper, Larry Stopper, Alex Stopper, Jake Ondrusek, Sagan Mullinix, Sammy Black, Steven Juarez, Gabriel Juarez, Mickey Juarez. She also leaves in her wake an amazing tribe of extended family, friends, neighbors, and faraway fans.
May her legacy live on through each and every one of us who was touched by her presence. Condolences may be sent to 327 N.E. 88th, Seattle, WA 98115. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center at UW Hospital Northwest. And the family extends their deep appreciation to the amazing staff there for their compassionate care of Cathy. Celebration of life will be held in the Summer 2023.
