Dr. Benoit called me at Gonzaga in April 1976 and invited me to be a Teaching Fellow in his SLU English department which of course I did. He was a marvelous academic and administrator who always connected with younger scholars. He served on my Masters Oral Exam committee and offered me encouragement at key moments. I offer sincere condolences to his family and other colleagues.

My sympathy to all of the family on the loss of your father and grandfather and friend. Dr Benoit was my Honors English professor at SLU in 1968. He also taught me in American Lit I and II He was a brilliant teacher and mentor to those of us who loved the written word I do not know if you knew this but even after his classes filled , which they did early, students would stand in or sit to audit his classes He taught me so much about writing. I was able to communicate often my appreciation for the skills I learned from him. I went to law school and credit him for the strong writing skills I learned. After he retired we continued to email periodically to discuss what each of us was reading. He introduced me to so many great writers whom I have shared with my family. May he rest in peace. His professional life touched the souls of so many of us.
