Dean Arthur Fournier passed peacefully at home in the presence of family on July 22, 2024.

Dean graduated from beloved Tufts University in 1956 where he majored in economics.  He also had a keen interest in history and political science and was facile with words. Given these tendencies, it is not surprising he found a perfect career as an attorney for the Federal Trade Commission in Seattle where he worked for 32 years.

Sometime between graduating from Yale Law School and passing the bar exam, Dean decided to venture west where he met an equally adventuresome bacteriologist named Mary on a church youth group hike on Mt. Rainier. They would marry in 1961 and proceed to have many more adventures over the next 63 years; among them raising 3 children and traveling the globe.

Domestically, Dean treasured local and National Parks and the San Juan Islands where he and Mary invested in a plot of land in an innovative development called Decatur Northwest. There they spent many happy long weekends right up to the time of Dean’s diagnosis of Leukemia in December 2023.

Dean was born October 17, 1934, when the U.S. was grappling with the Great Depression and, by the time he was in elementary school, a world war.  This certainly shaped Dean’s attitude about the world and built resilience. Living in war times likely fostered a sense of responsibility to the community and reverence for civic institutions. Dean never hesitated to volunteer for a cause he believed in; from local park trail maintenance, church work parties, canvassing for a political candidate to sitting on Boards and Committees; his calendar was always full.

Dean was a believer in exercise and excelled in distance running; completing several Marathons including the Boston Marathon before his knees gave way to overuse in his 70’s.  He then pivoted to daily rowing with Mt. Baker or Green Lake Rowing Clubs and continued right up until the pandemic.

Dean cared about family and especially loved his grandchildren of which he was blessed with four.  He was a lover of performing arts, opera, in particular, as well as symphony, Gilbert & Sullivan and Shakespeare. Dean frequently offered opportunities for his children and grandchildren to be enriched by these activities.

Dean was a faithful member of Woodland Park Presbyterian Church for 50+ years.  A memorial service will be held there at 3:00 PM on October 26, 2024. Address: 225 N. 70th St., Seattle, WA 98103.  All are welcome.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Rose Fournier; children JoAnna Martin, Dave Fournier and Lara Fournier and grandchildren Brielle and Taylor Martin and Maggie Jane and Kaelyn Fournier.
